Community Education

Community Education is the context in which sex education usually takes place. The family is where the child first learns about sexuality and relationships. It is in the family, as a spouse and parent that a person lives out his or her sexuality. Sex education, therefore, is much more than telling our children about the “birds and the bees”. It involves helping young people understand their individual sexuality and to feel comfortable and feel good about who they are. Parents by their words and actions portray their own attitudes to sexuality. If parents are comfortable with their own sexuality and are able to discuss these matters, their children will usually have a healthy view of themselves, which in turn will affect the way they relate to others.
